As the GlobeRiders tour was winding down I started doing the research to ride my bike home. Ed, another GlobeRider was also thinking of going to Iceland and one day in early June told me that the ferry for his planned trip was completely booked. Yikes! My plan was to fly home to Canada after my birthday party, return to Germany July 20 and then ride up to Hirtshals, Denmark for an August 1 departure to Iceland. This would allow me to visit Iceland during the warmest part of the season and also to ride across the Trans-Labrador at the end of summer, before it got too cold. When I checked the ferry website, I found the August 1 sailing was fully booked. The next departure on August 8 only had shared accommodation in a six-berth cabin available. Not wishing to share a North Atlantic crossing with five (possibly seasick) strangers I looked at the next departure on August 15. Yes, a cabin was available but of course that meant that the whole trip was pushed back a couple of weeks, into potentially colder temperatures. Next up, I needed to arrange shipping of my motorcycle from Iceland to Canada. I contacted Kathy at MotoFreight (as I’ve done for a number of shipments) and she suggested contacting the Iceland shipping company of Eimskip. Eimskip had regularly scheduled container service between Reykjavík and Halifax, so I talked with them about my plan. Cargo shipping is different from passenger movement in that you can’t book very far in advance, I would have to finalise the shipping after I arrived in Iceland, but I was assured I would be able to get the bike on.
After the ride from Muscat to Munich with GlobeRiders and my birthday party, I left my BMW R1250GSA at Zierer Motorrad for a thorough service and flew home on June 20. One of my favourite events of the year started on July 13; the Horizons Unlimited Travellers’ Meeting in Nakusp, B.C. Audrey and I have been attending and helping out at HUCanWest since 2003. I have been organising my travel schedule so that I can attend and so I was happy that I could make it work again this year. I usually give a few presentations on our travels, and I work as the official Presenter Wrangler. For an extra challenge this year, I did a slideshow presentation on the Muscat to Munich trip I had finished a few weeks earlier. As an extra added value bonus, four GlobeRiders attended the presentation; Doug and Iulia and Hugo and Michele. We all wore our “We’ll always have the sunrise over Baghdad” T-shirts! The event was a lot of fun and I love connecting with fellow travellers. On July 20 I flew back to Munich to pick up my R1250GSA and ride it home.Leaving Germany on June 20. I'll be back...

Munich to Calgary via Iceland | 2023
The GlobeRiders tour from Muscat to Munich included shipping of my motorcycle to Oman, but to allow people to ride around Europe after the tour, shipping home wasn’t included. So naturally I had the bright idea that I could ride it home. My plan was to ride to the northern tip of Denmark, take a ferry to Iceland, after two weeks of riding around Iceland I would ship the motorcycle to Eastern Canada and then ride the Trans-Labrador Highway and across Canada back home. I have been wanting to ride the Trans-Labrador Highway for a while now, so I was delighted that Klaus, a friend from the Calgary BMW club, also wanted to ride the TLH. He was planning to ride across Canada from Victoria to St. John’s and wanted to ride the Trans-Labrador on his return to Calgary. A plan was hatched for us to meet up on the east coast and ride home together. As the GlobeRiders tour was winding down I started doing the research to ride my bike home.
